Diabetic-pet owner stories

William & Becky: Wire Fox Terrier

Becky, a bubbly 10-year-old Wire Fox Terrier was first diagnosed with diabetes in April this year. Like many, her owners William and Barbara Dugard had never heard of the disease affecting dogs before.

“ It came as a total surprise to us,” says William, a retired police officer from Ockbrook, Derbyshire. He jokingly credits himself for the discovery. “I had to go into hospital for a few days and we thought she was stressed by that because the slight incontinence problem she had seemed to be getting a lot worse. But then we noticed that her urine had become quite sticky – when she peed outside, it was even attracting wasps. Barbara, who used to be a nurse, suspected that sugar in Becky’s urine might be the cause.”

Sure enough, a trip to the vets for tests revealed that Becky had high blood sugar levels and was diabetic.

“She’s been on insulin twice a day at 8am and 8pm since April. It hasn’t fazed us – the insulin is quite easy to administer and neither of us are needle-phobic. We’ve had to adapt her diet and ensure she has eaten before taking her medication. She has lost a little bit of weight but she was slightly overweight so that is no bad thing. It is easy to inject her and she is quite used to it now – if I go into the kitchen just before 8 o’clock in the evening to get her insulin out of the fridge, she follows me. I think she knows it is doing her good and you can see in her eyes that she is feeling better.”

“Friends we know with dogs have wanted to find out how we discovered it in case there are signs in their own pets. What amazed us most was how many pets have the disease. When Becky was diagnosed our vet told us that 30-40 cats and dogs registered with them have diabetes and that is just one surgery.”
